Why Hot Dip Galvanizing Works Paint protects steel by sealing it; once the film is scratched, rust starts underneath. Zinc works in two ways: Barrier Protection: Seals the steel from the environment. Sacrificial Protection: When damaged, the zinc around the scratch corrodes first to protect the steel beside it. Because the coating is metallurgically bonded (not just applied on the surface), it does not peel off under impact and does not need to be touched up every few years.
